When to do a newborn session?

Often, the first question I’m asked is when to do a newborn session.

Schedule your baby’s session for ten days after your due date. And schedule it ahead of time!

A newborn session should be conducted within the first two weeks of the baby’s birth. But… I have photographed many newborns older than two weeks. Just last week, I photographed a six-week-old baby, and the session was wonderful! After two weeks, the poses we can achieve may be limited, but we can still create a gorgeous big gallery of images.

I highly recommend scheduling ahead of time. This way, I can guarantee availability even though the actual session day may change. It’s one less thing to worry about, and I always make time for pre-booked sessions, adjusting to when the baby arrives.

The main reason for photographing within two weeks of birth is because the baby is still in sleepy womb mode. Another reason is that most babies get little bumps and flaky skin, a bit more so after two weeks. When you book your session, you will receive a session prep guide, which has tips about how to handle flaky and bumpy skin and what to expect during the photo session.
